Things have completely unraveled for the New York Knicks over the last month.

Not only did the Knicks lose out on Zion Williamson by ending up with the third overall pick in the NBA Draft, but their season-long dream of landing both Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving in free agency seems to be fading, as Durant tore his Achilles in Game 5 of the NBA Finals and Irving appears to have his sights set on the Brooklyn Nets.

Really, things could have not gone any worse for New York over the last several weeks, and the Knicks are now going to need to look at the alternatives in the likely event that their main goal fails.

So, how about taking a look at Washington Wizards guard Bradley Beal?

Rumor has it that the Wizards could be looking to trade Beal this summer, as Washington is going nowhere fast and Beal has two years at around $55 million remaining on his contract.

The Knicks could certainly put together a package that entices the Wizards, as they have the third overall pick plus some other young pieces they can include in the deal.

Beal certainly would not be as expensive as Anthony Davis, who ended up costing the Los Angeles Lakers Brandon Ingram, Lonzo Ball, Josh Hart, the fourth overall pick in this year's draft and two future first-rounders, so New York wouldn't have to worry about selling the farm.

Of course, if the Knicks do decide to go after Beal, it would have to be as part of a bigger plan to also lure another big-name free agent, as Beal is not good enough to be the No. 1 guy on a contending team.

Perhaps New York can trade for Beal and sign Durant with the hope that Durant will come back strong from his Achilles injury for the 2020-21 campaign, and the Knicks would then have a pretty nice duo of Durant and Beal?

Obviously, there are a lot of ifs in that scenario, but at this point, New York is probably going to have to take a risk if it wants to move forward. After all, this was supposed to be the summer the Knicks became relevant again, so they might have to do something.

New York has Kevin Knox, Mitchell Robinson, Allonzo Trier, Dennis Smith Jr. and Frank Ntilikina as pieces it can include in a trade for Beal.

Kevin Durant, Warriors, Knicks

It's not likely the Knicks would want to part with Knox or Robinson in the deal, as they apparently kept them out of talks for Davis (although Davis was a flight risk next year, so maybe Beal being under contract through 2021 changes things).

Still, the third overall pick definitely holds significant value, and a package centered around that selection could certainly pique Washington's interest.

Again, New York should only attempt to do this if it's part of a larger scheme, as Beal by himself isn't winning the Knicks anything.

New York has to know for sure that it is getting Durant or some other big-name free agent before moving assets for Beal, as it doesn't want to get stuck in no-man's land with a B-tier star and little to nothing else around him for the future.

Beal is just one of the many options the Knicks can pursue this summer, but it's something they should absolutely explore.
