With the 2017 NFL season officially in the books, the time for mock drafts has already begun. One common name at the top of the draft projections is USC quarterback Sam Darnold.

Darnold seems to be the early favorite to be the first gunslinger taken by the Cleveland Browns. At least, that is how ESPN's Todd McShay feels in his latest mock draft:

I still believe the Browns need to address the QB position here, and any of the top four quarterbacks are in play now that Darnold and Josh Rosen have officially declared for the draft. This pick obviously changes (or is up for grabs via trade) if Cleveland lands Kirk Cousins in free agency. Between off-field issues for Rosen and his tools and intangibles on the field, Darnold should be the pick. I understand why Kiper went with Josh Allen in his first mock, but Darnold is a little safer. He's the best of the bunch at this point.

The quarterback landscape has changed quite a bit with Washington Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins set to hit the market. But even if Cleveland does land Cousins, those top quarterback prospects will still be flying off draft boards relatively early.

Darnold has been one of the most highly-touted prospects over the past two years while still at Southern California. Despite a disappointing season, the consensus is still convinced that he is the best quarterback in the draft. As a result, he could very well soon be the latest in a long line of quarterbacks tasked with leading the Browns' resurgence back to relevance.
