The NFL has invited Colin Kaepernick to attend a one-on-one meeting with commissioner Roger Goodell, according to ESPN. However, the two sides are painting very different pictures about the whether or not the free agent quarterback has accepted in the invitation.

According to the lawyer representing Colin Kaepernick, they responded “yes” immediately. The meeting fell to shreds, at least according to the lawyer, after the gunslinger asked for a mediator to be there, but the NFL supposedly declining.

“We responded immediately that Colin would be happy to attend,” Mark Geragos (Kap's lawyer) said in a statement provided to ABC News. “Because of the grievance we asked that a mediator be present. A mediator also would ensure that the discussions were productive and confidential and not used as a PR stunt or prop by the league. Colin's proposal was rejected.”

League spokesman Joe Lockhart has a different story to tell.

“This isn't about his lawyer. This isn't about a mediator. The question of, ‘Has [Colin] been invited in?' the answer is yes,” Lockhart responded. “This isn't part of any grievance process. This is part of the overall discussion we've been having on some of these social issues.”

It is clear that — at least — Lockhart is trying to remove all context from this discussion and simply wants the narrative painted as a “yes or no” type of situation. For anyone who has a few brain cells, they recognize this as the same tactic that resulted in a peaceful protest becoming a hijacked discussion about everything other than what was being protested.

Anyway, it appears clear that this entire thing remains a debacle.
