It was already known that 2K was going to be making an NFL video game in 2021. And now there are important details that have emerged about the game being created. According to the 2K Twitter account, the company announced a partnership with the NFL to use star players in their new video game.

Altogether, 2K will now be able to use the names, numbers, and likeness of over 2,000 players in the NFL. As MySportsUpdate pointed out on Twitter, the last NFL 2K game was released in 2004.

Back in March, the league reached a deal with 2K to allow them to create a video game franchise beginning in 2021. While most fans want a game that can compete with the Madden series, the 2K game will be a non-simulation football game. Therefore, it may be geared toward the likes of the NFL Street or NFL Blitz games.

With that being said, the news of the NFL permitting 2K to use players' likenesses is huge considering that EA Sports has been the only video game company to have the rights to NFL players since 2004. David Ismailer, the president of 2K, shared his excitement on the company's partnership with the NFL:

“We’re thrilled to be working with the NFLPA and OneTeam to bring the biggest and best stars in football to the games we’re working on,” said David Ismailer, President of 2K. “We want to give fans experiences that are authentic, memorable and fun, and having a roster of real-life sports heroes through the Players Association and OneTeam is a huge part of delivering on that promise.”

For years, Madden has been the only NFL centric video game available for the masses. However, with 2K's new partnership, EA Sports may finally see some competition in the near future.
