Legendary sportscaster Al Michaels is leaving NBC's Sunday Night Football. However, Michaels will remain with NBC in an emeritus role.

Variety senior TV editor Brian Steinberg broke down exactly what the future looks like for Al Michaels at NBC.

Just in: Al Michaels has left ‘Sunday Night Football,' but he's not leaving NBC. He's been given 'emeritus status' and ‘will continue to broadcast and contribute across NBC Sports’ high-profile properties, including the NFL Playoffs and the Olympics.'

Michaels also recently accepted a deal with Amazon to call their Thursday Night NFL games. So fans of Al Michaels have no need to worry. They will have plenty of opportunities to hear him call games all season long.

He has been the voice of NBC's Sunday Night Football since 2006. But the game will get a new feel this year with Mike Tirico getting the job. Tirico was previously guaranteed the role of Sunday Night Football broadcaster by 2022. Since Michaels was forced out of the role, NBC rewarded him with a promotion of sorts.

Michaels commented on his new NBC role and Amazon deal.

“I’m looking forward to continuing my longtime NBC relationship while also launching the Thursday Night Football package on Amazon this fall. A special thanks to NBC Sports chairman Pete Bevacqua and the folks at NBCUniversal for their help in making this happen.”

Hearing Al Michaels call football games is always a treat. And even his previous work in MLB was great. But it is always entertaining listening to him do his thing at the Olympics. He is one of the most versatile sportscasters in the industry without question.
