Former NFL player Eugene Chung claims he was told “you’re not really a minority” in a coaching interview this offseason. Both of Chung’s parents are Korean.

He was also allegedly told he wasn’t the “right minority” to be hired, according to his interview with the Boston Globe.

“I was like, ‘Wait a minute. The last time I checked, when I looked in the mirror and brushed my teeth, I was a minority,’” Eugene Chung said. “So I was like, ‘What do you mean I’m not a minority?’

Formerly with the Patriots, among other NFL teams, Chung did not identify the team in question.

“I’m not sitting here bashing the league at all, because there are great mentors and there are great coaches that embrace the difference,” Chung said. “It’s just when the Asians don’t fit the narrative, that’s where my stomach churns a little bit.”

Given recent history in the United States, with hate crime against Asians seemingly at an all-time high, this is a really poor look by whatever NFL franchise this happens to be. Whichever one it is should be grateful that Eugene Chung didn’t name it or the person who was handling the interview. The person, at the very least, would be unemployed.
