Looks like former Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre won't be back on the field next NFL season.

Brett Favre said that a now-deleted Instagram post of himself after winning Super Bowl XXXI captioned to say that the 49-year-old Hall of Famer was planning on playing in the 2020 season was made by hackers.

Here's what the full post said before it was deleted:

“A true champion sticks to his or her calling. I will be coming out of retirement and making my return to play in the NFL for the 2020 season. Stay tuned for more #news!”

The three-time MVP will turn fifty on October 10, which would have made him the oldest player in NFL history. An honor that belongs to George Blanda, who began his career as a quarterback, but ended it as a kicker at age 48.

It wouldn't have been the first time that Favre flirted with coming out of retirement.

After 16 seasons with the Packers—and one with the Atlanta Falcons—Favre hung them up for all of a whole offseason. After announcing his retirement officially on March 4, 2008, Favre was traded to the New York Jets on August 8. Then in 2009, after a bit more speculation, the quarterback signed with the Minnesota Vikings. On January 17, 2011, two seasons later, he again announced his retirement.

As unlikely as it would have been for Favre to contribute on the field at his age, it would make for a gripping storyline. In addition to his three MVP awards, Favre is an 11-time Pro Bowler, three-time first-team and three-time second-team All-Pro, and he's fourth all-time with 508 career passing touchdowns and third all-time with 71,838 career passing yards.

Favre is also first all-time with 336 career interceptions, 59 more than second place, George Blanda, who threw 277.

Over the course of his 20-year career, Favre was sacked 525 times, and his injury history is well documented.

While thrilling, one worries the risks of suiting up again would have outweighed the rewards.
