After announcing on Twitter last week that he would try out for the XFL as a kicker, it seems retired NFL receiver Chad Johnson's football comeback was short-lived.

Despite not making a public statement as of yet, the 42-year-old informed the XFL on Sunday that he did not intend to participate in his tryout on Monday per Kevin Seifert of ESPN. Johnson, a five-time Pro Bowler receiver, spent 11 seasons in the NFL totalling over 11,000 yards and 67 touchdowns in his career.

The former NFL star has obvious leg talent. During the 2011 NFL lockout, Johnson tried his hand at professional soccer participating in a four-day trial with Sporting Kansas City of the MLS. In 2018, Johnson signed a professional soccer contract with Boca Raton FC of the then-National Premier Soccer League and resigned with the team in 2019.

In the 2009 preseason, as a member of the Cincinnati Bengals, Chad Johnson made an extra point and kicked off for the team. Last month, the 42-year-old posted a video of him on Twitter converting on a 60-yard field goal attempt.

As a league, the XFL is trying to become a secondary football league for the second time. The first time, the XFL was cancelled after just one season in 2001.

Owned by the WWE's Vince McMahon, the new XFL is composed of eight teams and is set to start in 2020. With the failure of secondary football leagues like the original XFL and the recently disbanded AAF, it'll be interesting to see how successful the revitalized football league will be.
