Clemson University running back Travis Etienne has taken to Twitter to announce that he will forgo the 2020 NFL Draft and return to school for his senior season.

For a halfback who was considered a potential first-round pick, this is certainly a surprising decision.

Etienne is coming off of a junior campaign in which he racked up 1,614 yards and 19 touchdowns on the ground. He also averaged a robust 7.8 yards per carry. In addition, he hauled in 37 receptions for 432 yards and four scores.

The 20-year-old arrived at Clemson back in 2017 and got his collegiate career off to a great start. Etienne ran for 766 yards and 13 touchdowns while registering 7.2 yards per attempt during his freshman season, making Third Team All-ACC.

Then, in 2018, Etienne broke out. He registered 1,658 yards while punching in 24 rushing scores, recording 8.1 yards per attempt. He reached the end zone twice as a receiver, as well, helping the Tigers win a national championship.

Etienne is a back-to-back ACC Player of the Year and is the conference's all-time leader in rushing touchdowns, total touchdowns and points for a non-kicker.

Etienne Wants To Lead Clemson To Another Title

The Jennings, La. native noted in his Twitter post that he is looking forward to earning his degree from Clemson. He also wants to return to the Tigers to help them win another national title.

Clemson reached the College Football Playoff National Championship for the second straight season and the fourth time in five campaigns this year, but fell to a Joe Burrow-led LSU squad by a score of 42-25.

Perhaps the loss to LSU left a sour taste in Etienne's mouth that he hopes to avenge next season.
