The finalists for the Pro Football Hall of Fame's class of 2022 for modern-era players have been officially released. Devin Hester, Andre Johnson, Patrick Willis, Jared Allen, Reggie Wayne and DeMarcus Ware highlight the star-studded list of 15 NFL players that are finalists this year.

The Hall's rules state that up to five of these players may be selected for the official class of 2022. The official voting procedure, per the full press release:

The full slate of Modern-Era Player candidates will be considered when the Hall of Fame’s Selection Committee meets virtually Jan. 18, 2022.

The Selection Committee may elect up to five Modern-Era Players for the Class of 2022; each must receive a minimum positive vote of 80 percent for election. Three others — Dick Vermeil, Art McNally and Cliff Branch, the finalists in the Coach, Contributor and Senior categories, respectively — also are candidates for the Class of 2022. Voting on each of those three will be held individually, in conjunction with the meeting to decide the Modern-Era Players.

Hester, Johnson and Ware are all in their first years of Hall-of-Fame eligibility. Allen is in his second year and Willis and Reggie Wayne are in their third. Every other player is in at least their fifth year of eligibility.

With three All-Pro selections, Hester is widely considered the greatest return man in recent NFL history. His 14 punt-return touchdowns are the most of all time. He spent most of his career with the Chicago Bears and has presumably the best chance to get enshrined into the Hall as a first-ballot selection.

The 2022 class of Pro Football Hall of Fame inductees will be announced on February 10th during the NFL Honors award show.
