Former Indianapolis Colts and Los Angeles Rams cornerback Eric Patterson was shot and killed on Saturday morning. The Tampa Bay Times reported that Patterson was shot around 5 am in his home in Tampa although the Tampa police department wouldn't confirm the report.

The Times cited unnamed relatives who confirmed that Patterson was the one who was the shooting victim.

According to the Tampa police department, Patterson's roommate woke up at 5 AM and heard a commotion. His roommate went into the living room and found Patterson on his back and a suspect fleeing the scene. Patterson was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Robert Weiner, his high school coach, posted his condolences on Twitter on Saturday afternoon.

“Sad, heartbreaking time for our Plant Panthers Football Family,” Weiner said. “Eric Patterson will always be a loved Panther. We mourn his passing. Our prayers embrace his family.”

After playing his college football at Ball State, Patterson was an undrafted free agent and originally signed with the New England Patriots. He didn't make the team, but in 2015 he appeared in three games, two with the Colts and one with Rams. He didn't start either of the games but was able to finish his NFL career with two tackles. He also spent some time in training camp with the Cleveland Browns but wasn't able to crack their roster either.

This is a tragic situation for Patterson's family, and thoughts and prayers are with them as they go through this tough time.
