Janoris Jenkins will watch Sunday's slate of games from his couch. The New York Giants released the 31-year-old cornerback on Friday. Next Sunday may be a different story, however.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, there is “every reason to believe” that Jenkins will be on a roster next Sunday, specifically for a playoff contender. As the NFL insider reports, that's not a question; when he will clear waivers and how much he will make is.

Due to Jenkins nursing an ankle, he could revert to the Giants' injured reserve if he goes unclaimed on Monday. New York then could waive him again, meaning he could go back on waivers from Monday to Tuesday.

Then there is a matter of his contract. Any team that claims him on Monday would owe him $1.2 million over the next two weeks. They would also be on-board for his 2020 contract, worth $11.25 million.

A contender in need of a cornerback would bring in Jenkins, according to Schefter, the two noted teams being the Kansas City Chiefs and Houston Texans.

The Giants released Jenkins two days after making an inappropriate remark on Twitter, calling a fellow user a derogatory slur offensive to the intellectually disabled community. He said on Thursday that the choice of words is part of his “slang.”

Before his release, Jenkins acted as New York's top cover cornerback. According to Pro Football Reference, he allowed a 65.3 passer rating in coverage, by far the top metric for the NFL team. He also tallied 54 combined tackles, 14 pass deflections and four interceptions in 13 games.
