NFL free agent quarterback Joe Flacco may have taken a hit to his comeback chances after the Denver Broncos released the longtime Baltimore Ravens signal-caller, as this week it was discovered the one-time Super Bowl MVP underwent surgery on his neck last month.

Flacco, 35, was traded last offseason to the AFC West's Broncos following the evident rise of Lamar Jackson but injured his neck in Week 8 for Denver during the 2019 campaign, sitting out the rest of the season and later failing a physical for the Mile High City franchise in March 2020.

According to SiriusXM NFL Radio's Adam Caplan on Twitter, the reason behind Flacco not agreeing to terms with a team is his recent neck surgery — which could sideline the veteran until August or September.

Flacco led the Ravens to the franchise's second Lombardi Trophy with a narrow victory in Super Bowl XLVII over head coach Jim Harbaugh's brother John Harbaugh and the San Francisco 49ers. Besides the Super Bowl run, Flacco has been criticized by skeptics for overall value added to teams, despite Baltimore's string of five consecutive postseason appearances in 2008-12, culminating in the big-game win.

Flacco joins ex–Carolina Panthers gunslinger Cam Newton on the market as the NFL's highest-profile available quarterbacks, as the recently released former regular-season MVP seeks a new employer, too.

This past week also saw Cincinnati Bengals QB Andy Dalton released by his longtime squad only to be quickly signed by the Dallas Cowboys as franchise quarterback Dak Prescott's backup, signing a one-year, $7 million deal if we're counting the going rate for some of these veteran tossers.
