Wide receiver Josh Gordon is eyeing a return to the NFL for the 2020 season, per Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk.

The recent reinstatement of Aldon Smith — along with the pending return of Randy Gregory — has paved the way for Gordon to seek a path to reentering the league as soon as September.

On Dec. 16, Gordon received his fifth suspension for violating the league's performance-enhancing drugs and substance abuse policy, which left him suspended indefinitely. He had retired ahead of the 2019 season, but came back to play in six games with the New England Patriots and five with the Seattle Seahawks, which saw him combine for 27 receptions and 426 receiving yards and one touchdown.

Should Gordon ultimately be reinstated, he would be free to negotiate with any organization interested in signing him. He would enter the 2020 NFL season at 29 years old with six years of professional experience, but due to suspensions he has just 63 games under his belt.

Gordon put together one of the most dominant individual wide receiver seasons in league history in 2013 with the Cleveland Browns, when he reeled in a league-high 1,646 receiving yards in just 14 games. In his first two professional seasons, he had combined for 14 touchdowns and was hailed as a cornerstone of the Browns' franchise, but much has changed since then.

After losing two entire seasons to suspensions, Gordon has attempted to continuously get himself in football shape. His immediate fate will be determined by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, who holds the keys as to whether or not Gordon will get the chance to suit up again in 2020.
