Kurt Warner has been retired for close to a decade. He’s about to turn 47 years old and already has his bust in Canton at the Pro Football Hall of Fame. But apparently, the former Rams, Giants, and Cardinals quarterback still had the itch to play as recently as a couple months ago and was seriously ready to make a comeback.

As Warner revealed during an appearance at the St. Louis Cardinals broadcast booth, he had already talked to an NFL coach about playing in the 2018 season:

“I was actually ready to, for this coming season, I actually talked to a coach and my wife said, ‘Go for it, I think it would be great,'” Warner said. “So I actually talked to a coach about possibly doing it if they needed someone, but then they went out and signed somebody. I don’t think they thought I was serious. So I think we’re completely done now.”

It certainly would have been quite a story if a team had actually gone out and signed a nearly-50-year-old Warner. But for obvious reasons, that was always unlikely to happen.

Although, it would have been interesting to see just how effective Warner would still be. After seeing a 40-year-old Tom Brady win the MVP, would it be that much of a stretch to believe that a Hall of Famer in Warner would be better than a good number of backup QBs currently employed today?

But it’s probably for the best that no one gets to see that scenario play out in real life. The risk to Warner’s health is too great. His playing career was great, but now it's over and done, and he should now focus on the next phase of his life.
