The NFL is considering flex scheduling for Monday Night Football, which could make sure all primetime games feature competitive teams, something that hasn’t always been the case in the last few years. There has been flex scheduling for years for Sunday night primetime games, but never for Monday.

According to Sports Business Journal, the NFL has asked teams their input on moving a Sunday game to Monday while moving the original Monday game to Sunday.

Any flex scheduling changes would not take effect until new media rights deals kick in, starting with the 2023 season. Even though the NFL has not started formal negotiations with any networks, ESPN has let it be known that it wants to incorporate flexible scheduling as part of a new “Monday Night Football” deal.

It makes sense that ESPN would want to change that because having two teams late in the season that aren’t in the playoff race playing in a primetime game isn’t good for business.

During Week 1o of the 2018 season, the 1-7 New York Giants and 2-8 San Francisco 49ers faced off on Monday Night Football. ESPN has also told the NFL if they get the next contract for Monday Night Football, they will move the games to ABC.

The biggest question is how teams will react to this proposal. Teams set up all their travel for the season before the season starts, so not knowing if they are playing on Sunday or Monday could put a wrench in those plans.

Either way, this is probably something the NFL will push for because competitive football games on Monday Night Football are best for business.
