Custom looped sound effects?

Sounds like something you would see in a video game. This is something you see in MLB:The Show, with players being able to make custom chants for crowds. But in real life? No way!

Well this is 2020, so nothing is off the table, including this. According to sources speaking with NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, the NFL have informed teams that they will each receive custom pre-recorded crowd noise to be played over the PA system throughout the game.

The NFL informed clubs it will provide a loop of pre-recorded crowd noise specific to each team’s stadium that must be played over the PA system in empty stadiums — and partially filled stadiums, at least to start the season — at 70 decibels starting at kickoff, per sources.

The NFL seems to be following the lead of every other league — starting with soccer in Europe — of having artificial crowd noise filtered into the stadium to create as close to a normal feel as possible. The unique idea of the NFL to have custom versions for each team is an interesting one. Does this mean that there will be familiar chants ringing through stadiums, like the New York Jets “J-E-T-S, JETS, JETS, JETS!” or “Fly Eagles Fly?” One would have to think so.

How effective these will be to simulate a normal NFL game is uncertain. There are many critics of the article crowd noises, saying it takes them out of the immersion of the game while watching it on TV. Those that criticize the crowd noise would prefer the leagues to go all in on the craziness and uniqueness of 2020 and allow the stadiums to be silent, allowing fans to hear on-field chatter they would normally never hear. It is still unclear how natural the custom crowd noises will sound, but once again it is a way for the NFL to continue to make things as normal as possible in this incredibly crazy year.
