After being let go by the Miami Dolphins, Brian Flores struggled to find another head coaching gig in the league. He now finds himself in an assistant position with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Flores filed a lawsuit against the NFL and several teams, questioning the lack of minority hires within the organization. It sounds like a new plan is shaping up that will hopefully bring in more minority hires.

According to Jonathan Jones, the NFL is hiring a group of six “experts to review the league’s diversity hiring procedures and then provide recommendations for consideration.” Those six people consist of Pamela Carlton, Peter Harvey, Patricia Brown Holmes, Stefanie K. Johnson, Rick Smith, and Don Thompson.

These six individuals will form a committee to evaluate minority hires within the NFL. Hopefully, this leads to more hires for minority coaches and staff members, as the league is lacking diversity in leadership roles. This is a nice start to what Brian Flores is fighting for, however, we won't know if it actually works until this plan is put to action.

Nine head coaching jobs opened up this offseason and only two of them were filled by a minority candidate. The Houston Texans hired Lovie Smith while the Miami Dolphins hired Mike McDaniel. The previous coaches of these organizations were David Culley and Brian Flores, so there was not an increase in minority hires within the NFL.

Hopefully, one-day discussions and decisions like these won't be necessary. The NFL has done a poor job offering leadership roles to minorities for quite some time now and it's about time the league adapts.
