The NFL has plenty on its plate with the ongoing CBA negotiations. This has not stopped the league from revisiting some ideas to improve the game.

The Philadelphia Eagles were one of four teams that have proposed rule changes this offseason. While some of their ideas seem to pertain to clarity on current rules, they did include another intriguing aspect for the league to consider.

The Eagles suggested an alternative to the onside kick that would instead allow the trailing team to attempt a 4th-and-15 from their own 25-yard line. The NFL even tested out this feature during this year’s Pro Bowl in an effort to provide a spark to the event.

The NFL has ramped up its efforts to to make the game safer by reducing the opportunity for high-impact collisions, especially on special teams. Although removing running starts during kickoffs has certainly helped the cause, successful onside kicks are now few and far in between.

Giving team an opportunity to take such a risk would provide an intriguing aspect to late-game situations. Of course, it remains to be seen how this potential NFL rule change would be received by the rest of the league since this is hardly the first time the 4th-and-15 option has been explored.

The NFL has watched the XFL make headlines with some of their revolutionary changes to football. While they are not looking to fall too far behind its competitor when it comes to innovation, the Eagles will need to garner plenty of support if they hope to make it come tor fruition.
