Monday Night Football on ESPN will sound different this season than past, as a new broadcast booth was announced Friday. With just over a month until the kickoff of the 2020 NFL year, the trio of Steve Levy, Louis Riddick, and Brian Griese appear in line to be manning the booth, per Jim Miller of ESPN.
Levy and Griese were given the opportunity to call Week 1 of MNF last year due to the two games that the league scheduled. That trial run apparently went well enough that both have now been given the full-time gig, with the college duo of Chris Fowler and Kirk Herbstreit also having received consideration.
A longtime ESPN employee, Levy has been with the company since 1993. He has recently rejoined the network’s college football coverage, a role he has been at since 2016.
Riddick has been heralded as one of the premier on-air voices for football coverage on ESPN since he joined the network in 2013. Previously having served as the Director of Pro Personnel for both Washington and the Philadelphia Eagles, Riddick has reportedly been a hot commodity for franchises looking to fill front office positions.
Griese had an 11-year career as an NFL quarterback, having begun his broadcasting career in 2009 with ESPN primarily as a college football analyst.
The trio is set to call their first game together on Sept. 14 when the New York Giants travel to play the Pittsburgh Steelers. Just how successful the group is largely depends on the NFL’s ability to navigate 2020 through the COVID-19 pandemic, which has already caused the league consternation as training camps have opened.
