The NFL has officially welcomed a new host city to the league with the Las Vegas Raiders set to kick off the 2020 NFL season at Allegiant Stadium. It appears Commissioner Roger Goodell already has his eyes on some potential future locations.

Goodell acknowledged the possibility of Toronto joining the NFL, via Darin Gantt of Pro Football Talk:

“It certainly could be a great city for an NFL team,” he said of Toronto. “A stadium up to NFL standards is going to be an important element.”

The prospect of the NFL placing a team in Toronto would certainly be an intriguing one. Although it may have taken some time, the NBA saw a tremendous amount of fan support when the Raptors won the NBA Finals last year. They proved that they are more than capable of serving as a host city for a new team.

The NFL has also recent ramped up its efforts to take its product to the international stage by playing games in London and now Mexico. Putting a team in Toronto would give them immediate access the market in Canada as they look to continue to stretch the game across borders.

The Rogers Centre would be the most ideal venue since it currently serves as the home of the MLB's Toronto Blue Jays and CFL's Toronto Argonauts. However, Goodell's comments indicate that the current stadiums available are not exactly up to the standards of the NFL. After all, they are about to have two state-of-the-art venues to help usher in a new era for the Raiders, Los Angeles Rams, and Los Angeles Chargers.
