Reche Caldwell played wide receiver in the NFL during the 2000s and he passed away on Saturday. According to a report TMZ Sports, which was confirmed by his mother. The former eight-year veteran was shot and killed in Tampa. He was only 41 years old.

While speaking to his mother, TMZ Sports revealed that Caldwell was preparing to go out on a date with his girlfriend on Saturday. The former NFL wideout proceeded to head back into his home to grab a jacket.

As he went to grab his jacket, Caldwell's girlfriend shared that he was ambushed by a couple of people who jumped out of the bushes near his house. Then, the people shot Caldwell in the chest and leg. Despite someone calling 911, he  died while he was in the ambulance.

From 1999-2001, Caldwell put together a stellar collegiate career at Florida. In his final season with the Gators, he recorded 65 receptions for 1,059 yards and 10 touchdowns.

Altogether, the former college standout at Florida would total 152 catches, 1,851 yards, and 11 touchdowns in his NFL career. His best season came in 2006 with the Patriots, when he was able to notch a career-high 61 receptions for 760 yards and four touchdowns.

As a result of his performance at Florida, the former All-SEC selection was selected by the San Diego Chargers (now Los Angeles Chargers) in the second round of the 2002 NFL Draft. Besides the Chargers, Caldwell would spend time with the New England Patriots and Washington Redskins as well.
