While many NFL fans saw this happening from a mile away, it will still pain them to know that the coronavirus pandemic has affected the NFL to the degree that the league has to shut down their facilities for the sake of public safety.

Roger Goodell and the league’s higher-ups released a memo that facilities of the 32 NFL teams must be shut down. This effectively hindered the ability of teams to hold any of their usual offseason efficiently. The directives will take effect at 6 PM Wednesday.

However, they also listed out personnel who would be exempted from the league-mandated shut-down:

  • Employees providing medical treatment to players such as athletic trainers and physicians
  • Directors of facilities, security personnel, and independent contractors involved in the facility’s security.
  • Technology staff vital in keeping the club’s IT network active and online.

However, the NFL reminded clubs that they shouldn’t let the shutting down of team facilities stop them from working on their offseason activities. He said that teams can still sign free agents and scout prospects in spite of the shutdown.

He also reminded all of the relevant parties that they share in the fight against COVID-19 with the rest of the United States.

“The challenges we face are not unique,” Goodell said in the letter. “Many businesses and individuals throughout the country are experiencing and addressing similar issues. Please be assured that the NFL is well-positioned to meet these operational challenges as we prepare to offer our fans and the country an outstanding 2020 NFL season.”

This move by the NFL ensures that the problem does not escalate any further.
