CJ Anderson and LeGarrette Blount are part of this next Super Bowl story. There has been a debate in the past several years about the utility of running backs in the NFL, with some arguing the elite talents' returns are diminishing to the overall productivity for offenses.

Despite the devaluation of running backs in some circles, there is no denying the unmistakable feeling that something is missing from Super Bowl LIV in Miami, Florida, two Sundays from now between the San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs—that's because neither veteran rushers CJ Anderson nor LeGarrett Blount are participating.

Super Bowl LIV will be the first big game in seven years without Anderson or Blount, as pointed out by a an NFL subreddit user “u/spokenwordjazz.”

CJ Anderson, 28, last played for the Detroit Lions during the 2019 season before being released two games into the campaign. He is a free agent still. The 33-year-old LeGarrette Blount, meanwhile, also played for the Lions but during the 2018 season, finishing the year with the NFC North franchise before entering the offseason as a free agent, as he is to this day.

Anderson represented the running back duo in last year's Super Bowl for the Los Angeles Rams in their losing effort to the New England Patriots.

Prior to short stints with the Carolina Panthers and Oakland Raiders in 2018 before signing on with the Rams, Anderson was a longtime rusher for the Denver Broncos, winning a title in Super Bowl 50 in the 2015 season.

Anderson and the Broncos previously appeared in the Super Bowl when they lost to the Seattle Seahawks in February of 2014, at the end of the 2013 season.

Blount appeared in back-to-back Supes in 2017-18 with the New England Patriots and Philadelphia Eagles, respectively. Blount won two NFL titles with the Patriots, including in SB XLIX, before switching sides and bringing home the Eagles their first title in franchise history two years ago in SB LII.

The key to Super Bowl LV next season? Maybe it's one NFL franchise signing both Blount and Anderson in the backfield.
