Trent Richardson – remember him?  Well, the former third-overall pick by the Cleveland Browns in the 2012 NFL Draft has found himself washing ashore back in Alabama, where, somehow, he’s going to continue playing football. He’s not suiting up for Nick Saban’s team, though, but rather for the Birmingham team of the Alliance for American Football, according to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk.

Former Crimson Tide running back Trent Richardson returns to Alabama, joining the Birmingham franchise of the Alliance for American Football. The upstart spring league announced the looming move on Wednesday.

Trent Richardson impressed in his first year in the pros. He was among the few bright spots on a bad Browns team in 2012 that finished with a 5-11 record, as he rushed for 950 yards to go with 11 touchdowns on 267 carries as the team’s bell cow in the backfield. A year later, Cleveland sent him to the Indianapolis Colts in exchange for a 2014 first-round selection after just two games with the Browns in the 2013 season.

That’s when it started to go downhill for the NFL career of Richardson, as he rushed for a total of 563 yards with only three rushing scores in 16 games in 2013. His stint with the Colts didn’t last long, as he was waived by the team in 2015. The running back would later sign contracts with the Oakland Raiders and the Baltimore Ravens but failed to play another NFL regular season game again.

In an attempt to get back into the NFL, Richardson tried to be relevant again by playing in the CFL, but his stay there did not amount to anything that would turn the heads of any NFL teams.

Richardson’s chances of getting back into the NFL may have greatly dwindled, but his passion for the game of football is clearly still there, telling Matt Zenitz of AL.com how thrilled he is by having another shot at playing professionally again.

“Excited about this,” Richardson said. “Another opportunity for my professional career. Happy to be doing something that I really love doing, especially in Alabama and in Birmingham, which is a home away from home for me.”
