The Washington Redskins will officially announce on Monday morning that they will be changing their nickname, according to John Keim of ESPN. As of writing, however, no new name has been announced for the NFL team.

The Redskins nickname has widely been considered a racial slur against Native Americans. With widespread racial tensions running high since the death of George Floyd death last May, the Washington franchise has been contemplating on a name change since early July.

Now, it looks like times are finally changing for the NFL franchise after 87 years since they adopted the moniker. The franchise held the name Braves for one year in 1933.

The upcoming change was actually forced by a slew of sponsors that include FedEx, Pepsi and Nike. The giant brands threatened that they would stop doing business with the Washington’s NFL franchise unless the team’s “Redskins” name was changed. With the aforementioned group totaling $620 million in investments, it was a warning the ownership couldn’t exactly refuse.

In related news, Sports Business Daily reported that the new name will not be announced anytime soon as the paperwork with the trademark issues are yet to be completed.

While the new name is still up in the air, there have been several suggestions for the new name from social media, including Warriors, Redtails and Red Wolves. Nonetheless, the team might also simply go back to their roots and run with the Braves, which would be thoroughly appropriate.
