The Bills and Bears, two teams with high hopes in 2021, meet in Week 2 of the preseason. Both teams started their preseason slate with wins. It’s time to continue our NFL odds series and make a Bills-Bears prediction and pick.

All eyes will be on the Bears quarterback battle, as Justin Fields look to build off his impressive Week 1 showing. He's competing against veteran Andy Dalton, who is in is first season with Chicago. Super Bowl champion Nick Foles is battling for a roster spot as well.

On the Bills side, it's up in the air if star quarterback Josh Allen will play in this game. He's quickly become one of the NFL's best players, so even if he makes a preseason appearance here, it won't be for more than a drive or two. The Bills enter this season with perhaps their best chance of winning the Super Bowl of any season this century.

Here’s how the bookmakers have set the lines for Saturday's matchup.

Why The Bills Could Cover

The fact that the Bills are 3 1/2 point underdogs to the Bills tells us that this is a preseason game. The Bills are expected to be one of football's best teams in 2021, and have a serious chance to win their first Super Bowl in franchise history. Although their first preseason game was led by the backup units, Buffalo was able to hang around with Detroit and lost by just one point.

In their preseason opener, the Bills played three quarterbacks under center, each with a compelling reason to earn the backup nod behind Allen. Davis Webb spent time on the Bills practice squad last season and was briefly on the active roster. Jake Fromm was a star quarterback at the University of Georgia and after not playing at all in his rookie season of 2020, took his first snaps as in a professional last week. Lastly, there is Mitchell Trubisky, the former Bears number two overall selection who didn't pan out in Chicago, but is out for a second chance in Orchard Park.

Trubisky only got two snaps in the Bills opener last week, but the Bills coaching staff might push him into further action this week, especially against his former team. Assuming Fromm and Trubisky get more snaps than they did in Week 1, this could be a great opportunity to prove that they deserve a regular season roster spot. That extra motivation for Trubisky of playing against the Bears might even be enough to propel the Bills to victory – or at the very least, cover the 3 1/2 point spread. This game is the makings of being a one-score contest.

Why The Bears Could Cover

It was just one game, but Justin Fields is already showing signs of become the next great quarterback in Chicago. After completing 14 of 20 passes for 142 yards and a passing touchdown, Fields is likely to see the majority of snaps again. The Bears coaching staff will be eager to see if their rookie QB can have a repeat performance – or perhaps even better – since they are assessing to see if Fields is capable of being the team's Week 1 regular season starter. The hype on Fields is expected to only rise as the preseason continues. As the Bears haven't been to the Super Bowl since 2007, their fanbase is probably hoping for Fields to win the starting job. After all, the other option, Andy Dalton, couldn't even win a playoff game while with the Bengals.

Dalton will get some significant snaps in this game too, but let's be real, this is Fields' time to shine. Whether or not he gets the starter nod won't change the fact that I think he'll have another spectacular game in Week 2. If Fields plays as expected, the Bears should be able to cover the small spread. Maybe we even get to see a game-winning touchdown pass by Fields in the fourth quarter?

With Nick Foles on the bench and expected to get a few snaps as well, the Bears have a quarterback that knows how to come into a football game and win despite limited experience. This is what the Bears have with Fields in this Week 2 game, but the rookie should step up once again. Doing so leaves a good chance that the Bears guarantee a winning record this preseason.

Final Bills-Bears Prediction & Pick

If this were the regular season, I'd almost always pick the Bills immediately. But the preseason is all about evaluating the more inexperienced players who are fighting for roster spots and playing time. In the case of this game, the main storyline to watch is the progression of Justin Fields. Given that the Bills don't have a quarterback battle at stake, the Bears offense has much more to prove here. If Fields puts together a similar performance to last week, it will be enough to give the Bears enough wiggle room to cover the 3 1/2 spread here. Preseason gets do stay close, but I see the Bears winning 17-10.

FINAL BILLS-BEARS PICK: Bears -3 1/2 (-115)
