The NFL playoffs are finally here and the Dallas Cowboys will host the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Wild Card. Two historic teams face off in a do-or-die game. It's time to continue our NFL odds series with a 49ers-Cowboys prediction and pick.

The San Francisco 49ers earned their way to the postseason after starting the season 2-4. They won eight of their last 11 games which surged them to the 6-seed in the NFC. The NFC West was a tough division, with three teams finishing with at least 10 wins. A lot of people counted the 49ers out this season, but they found ways to win games and even hung in there against the top teams. Their only three losses since Week 7 came against the No.1 seed in the AFC, the Tennessee Titans, and the Cardinals and Seahawks. The 49ers swept the Los Angeles Rams this season and also beat the Cincinnati Bengals to help get their way to the playoffs.

The Dallas Cowboys showed up this season. They certainly made their mark and it came early in the season. After a loss on the opening Thursday Night Football against the defending Super Bowl Champions, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Cowboys won 12 of their last 16 games and earned the 3-seed in the NFC, right behind the Bucs. This season certainly isn't a fluke, as they contain one of the top all-around squads in the NFL. They can hurt you with their offense and their defense on any given Sunday. This will be a tough test for Dallas, however, as the 49ers are no joke either. They can score points and disrupt any offense in the NFL. This will certainly be a fun game to watch.

Why The 49ers Could Cover The Spread

San Francisco will need to really show up if they want to cover this spread. They come in as the underdog which makes sense considering the lower seed. These teams did not face each other during the regular season, so it will be the first time these two teams meet since 2020. The key for the offense will be to keep it simple for quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. They can't let him commit any turnovers or that will seriously hurt them. The Cowboys' defense feeds off turnovers and Trevon Diggs will certainly make his mark on this game somehow, they just better hope it isn't one of his league-leading interceptions.

What is great about the 49ers' offense is that they share the wealth and really confuse the defense. If receiver Deboo Samuel continues to get carries, he can really benefit the offense with his ball-carrying ability. The defense will have its troubles containing the Cowboys' offense we all know that. But they can still win this game even if they give up a few scores. They will need to keep it a low-scoring game by trying to force the Cowboys' offense to commit turnovers. This is a very doable game for them to cover and win. The 49ers ended the regular season 9-8 against the spread.

Why The Cowboys Could Cover The Spread

Dallas comes into this game as the favorites at home. That makes sense and it's actually unclear why they weren't given a higher spread after the remarkable season they had. Either way, they should be able to cover this spread because they will be fully healthy come Sunday. Ezekiel Elliot managed to just barely squeeze by 1k rush yards on the season with 1,002. He ended with 10 touchdowns even though it seemed like a quiet year for him. They got a lot of production out of backup running back Tony Pollard who ended with over 1,000 combined yards and two total touchdowns. The Cowboys will cover this spread if they get solid production from their two backs.

We all know Dak Prescott will likely be on his game. He'll have most of his weapons but will be without receiver Michael Gallup, who recently tore his ACL and is done for the season. The defense will have a majority of their stars and they need them big time. Facing Samuel and the 49ers' offense won't be easy. If the Cowboys' offense controls the run game and the time of possession, then that will keep the 49ers' offense off the field. That is their recipe for success to cover this spread.

Final 49ers-Cowboys Prediction & Pick

This will be a very exciting game to watch on Sunday afternoon. It will be the middle game of the three playoff games and so it will likely have the biggest audience. This is also a tough decision to make, but I gotta assume the Cowboys cover this spread and win the game. They are a very good team and just put up 51 points against the Eagles in Week 18. They are playing very well, as are the 49ers, but I think the Cowboys get the job done.

Final 49ers-Cowboys Prediction & Pick: Cowboys -3 (-112)
