Former NFL MVP Cam Newton will reportedly “take his time” before joining a new organization in free agency, per Jeremy Fowler of ESPN. The move does not come as much of a surprise, considering that the market for Newton has floundered throughout the off-season. With nearly all of the league's starting quarterbacks jobs looking filled, Newton seems to have little choice but to wait out the market.

The story from ESPN indicates that Cam Newton and the New England Patriots had some level of dialogue during free agency, but how close the sides were on reaching a deal remains unknown.

Instead, it appears that the Patriots are comfortable heading into their first season in two decades sans Tom Brady with Jarrett Stidham and Brian Hoyer battling it out for the starting spot. This leaves Cam Newton in limbo.

Newton's former team, the Panthers, have turned the starting reins over to Teddy Bridgewater after inking the signal caller to a three-year deal. There was speculation that Cam Newton could be reunited with former head coach Ron Rivera in Washington, but the organization already features young quarterback Dwayne Haskins, who has been designated as the starter of the future in D.C.

Injuries limited Cam Newton to just two games last season, which has likely cooled his market amid the uncertainty surrounding the 2020 year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Jameis Winston, who led the league in passing yards (5,109) last season while with Tampa Bay, had to settle for a backup deal with the Saints.

Whether Cam Newton has to ink a contract for a similar role remains to be seen, but his decision is likely to take some time to be reached.
