Former Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy is still without a team and is looking to return to coaching in 2020. McCarthy, 56, coached the Packers to their Super Bowl XLV championship, but after going 11-16-1 in 2017 through 2018 was fired by Green Bay and replaced by Matt LaFleur.

Per NFL Network's Tom Pelissero:

“Yes, McCarthy fully intends to be an NFL head coach again in 2020. And by any objective measure, his resume alone should make him a top candidate in any search. … He has an excellent reputation within the league for his work with quarterbacks, including two Packers legends. …

But at age 56, he's not looking for a cushy gig or one last payday.”

Before his tenure in Green Bay, McCarthy was a longtime offensive coordinator for the New Orleans Saints and later the San Francisco 49ers. Finding no bidders before the 2019 season, McCarthy had to sit out and wait for next year's possible vacancies.

Open jobs do exist now, though. Most notably are the Washington Redskins and Carolina Panthers. Both could be interesting fits for McCarthy — known as an offensive guru in the past and quarterback whisperer. Although, those claims were squashed in the last months with the Packers when friction with Aaron Rodgers found McCarthy out the door in the cold.

The Panthers have Kyle Allen, the undrafted free agent signed last season who emerged as a real deal starter in the NFL when Cam Newton went down in Week 2. Newton will likely be traded in the offseason to the highest bidder among franchises.

Meanwhile, the Redskins have rookie quarterback Dwayne Haskins, selected in the first round of the 2019 draft.

Both could be landing spots if McCarthy is gunning for another head-coaching position after his dismissal with the Pack.
