Through the first three weeks of the season, there has been plenty of attention on the NFL’s officials calling an abnormal amount of roughing the passer penalties on defenders.

It has created much chatter around the league about needing clarity on what type of actions would draw a flag. The NFL Competition Committee put forth a video on Thursday morning in an attempt to clear any misunderstanding for what the referees will deem as infractions of the rule.

The video itself has four different plays on both ends of what actions would draw a flag and what falls within the regulations of the rule. The driving point of the entire explanation has been the body weight of the defender on the quarterback.

Basically, the officials don’t want a defensive player’s body weight falling on a quarterback after a hit. Instead, they want the player to shift sideways, defying gravity, to fall away from the gunslinger in the process of a hit.

In each of the clips, the defender is shown putting their entire body weight on an opposing quarterback, putting them in an awkward angle which could put them in the spot of suffering a significant upper body injury. It is something that the league wants to avoid occurring on these type of plays.

This is shown in the other clips, which recommends how players should tackle. It is a work in progress, but this at least drives home the point body weight will be one of the major determining factors in the call being made moving forward.

Meanwhile, the league has also sent out a statement, further driving home that point. It was also made clear that the emphasis on quarterback protection will not be changed in the process.

Now that the NFL has provided some sort of clarity to the situation, it will be interesting to see how teams around the league digest this new information and move forward with this season.
