The Washington Capitals will find themselves in Canada tonight as they take on the Calgary Flames. This will be the final time these teams face off this season as the Flames won the first battle with a 4-3 overtime win in Washington DC. The Capitals currently sit in a comfortable last wild-card position in the East while the Flames are the top dog of their Pacific Division. It’s time to continue our NHL odds series with a Capitals-Flames prediction and pick.

Why The Capitals Can Cover The Spread/Win

The Washington Capitals have had some inconsistency problems lately as the Caps have the talent up front, averaging 3.21 goals per game, but have a power play that isn't as good as you would expect from a typical Capitals team – succeeding at just 17 percent of the time. Defensively, the Caps aren't too bad as they only allow 2.74 goals per game and have a nice penalty kill which hits at an 80.5 percent success rate.

There's no clear starting goaltender as the Capitals have been pretty clear about splitting the starts between both Vitek Vanecek and Ilya Samsonov. Vanecek is repping a .921 save percentage and allowing 2.25 goals per game, while Samsonov is repping a .901 save percentage and allowing 2.93 goals per game. If I were to guess, I'd say that Vanecek gets the starts here tonight, but it's truly a toss-up.

Why The Flames Can Cover The Spread/Win

The Calgary Flames are red-hot *wink wink, nudge nudge* lately and have an incredibly deep team, especially now that they are fully healthy. The Flames are currently ranked sixth in the league for goals per game (3.48) and have a strong power-play unit that scores about 22.7 percent of the time. On the defensive side of the puck, the Flames are just as good, allowing just 2.46 goals against per game, ranking them second in the league. Their penalty kill is also fantastic with an 84.8 percent success rate.

Since starting goaltender Jacob Markstrom played against the Oilers yesterday, expect to see backup Dan Vladar get the start between the pipes tonight. He had a big overtime win against the Avalanche last Saturday as he is now allowing 2.84 goals against with a .904 save percentage on the season. He'll look to shut the door on Alex Ovechkin and company tonight.

Final Capitals-Flames Prediction & Pick

The Flames are heading into this game off of a huge win last night against their biggest rival in the Edmonton Oilers. One could argue that they'd be tired after an important game like that and ride the Capitals in this matchup tonight, but not me. I think the Flames keep it rolling, regardless of who is in the net for the Capitals tonight. The Flames have been red hot and have shown no sign of stopping any time soon. Give me their Moneyline while it's still decently low for a team like this.
