The Dallas Stars will head into the District of Columbia today to take on the red-hot Washington Capitals. The Stars are in the midst of a 3-4-0 slide as they are currently just three points outside of the wild card position. The Capitals have a secure spot in the last wild card seed, as we basically know which team is making the playoffs in the Eastern Conference. It’s time to continue our NHL odds series with a Stars-Capitals prediction and pick.

Why The Stars Can Cover The Spread/Win

The Dallas Stars are heading into this game kind of cold, having lost four out of five of their last games. The Stars rely very heavily on their top line to get things rolling for them but if they can be held in check, so does the rest of the team. And now with the absence of defenseman Miro Heiskanen, the Stars lose a bunch of talent on the back end. With backup goaltender Braden Holtby injured, we could very well see starting netminder Jake Oettinger in net again tonight even though he just started last night against the Islanders. He's been relatively solid this season with a .917 save percentage and allowing 2.49 goals against per game. He'll look to get another notch in the win column for the Stars as they desperately try to claw their way back into the playoffs.

Why The Capitals Can Cover The Spread/Win

The Washington Capitals are coming into this game off a huge 4-3 shootout win over Carolina on Friday. That game puts the Capitals at 7-0-1 so far in the month of March where their offense has been on fire. The Caps are now on a four-game winning streak and will look to improve on it tonight at home. Goaltender Vitek Vanecek has quietly been playing some pretty respectable hockey for the Caps this year as he is sporting a .919 save percentage and allowing 2.35 goals against per game through his 31 games played this season. He'll look to get another start between the pipes tonight to help keep the streak alive for the month of March.

Final Stars-Capitals Prediction & Pick

Both of these teams tend to be very streaky, and because of that, I'm going to go with the team that is on the positive streak at the moment: the Washington Capitals. The Stars have been losing left and right while the Capitals have been winning outright game after game. I don't love the odds for this matchup as a Capitals Moneyline bet, so just give me the good ol' fashioned 3-Way Moneyline, picking the Capitals to win in regulation today.
