The Dallas Stars head into Nashville to take on the Predators as this Central Division rivalry continues for the third game this season. In the previous two matchups, both games were in Dallas where they currently split the series 1-1. The Predators are ahead of the Stars by just four points in the standing as it’s time to continue our NHL odds series with a Stars-Predators prediction and pick.

Why The Stars Can Cover The Spread/Win

The Dallas stars have continued to slowly track down the Predators in the standings after last night's 3-2 overtime win over the Winnipeg Jets. The Stars' offense hasn't been great as they are tied for 20th in the rankings, scoring 2.86 goals per game. However, recently their forwards have taken a step in the right direction as they are 5-2 since the All-Star break. Defensively, the Stars have been starting to play better, with big thanks to goaltender Jake Oettinger. However, backup netminder Braden Holtby will be looking to get the start tonight as he sports a .912 save percentage and allowing 2.78 goals against. He'll have to be on his A-game and expect help from his offense if the Stars want to find a win on the road tonight.

Why The Predators Can Cover The Spread/Win

The playoffs are far from a lock for Nashville as they sit just four points ahead of the Stars, so a win tonight is a must for them. Over the past seven games, Nashville's defense has fallen significantly, allowing a league-leading 3.85 goals per game – including four goals to the Stars just two weeks ago. However, the Predators bounced back in Florida on Tuesday after taking home a 6-4 victory. Luckily, the Predators look to goaltender Juuse Saros as he'll get the start between the pipes tonight. He's been tremendous all year long with a .921 save percentage and allowing 2.49 goals against per game. He'll look to shut down a hot Stars team tonight and increase their lead for the playoff race.

Final Stars-Predators Prediction & Pick

The Predators will be retiring their beloved goaltender, Pekka Rinne's jersey number tonight, so I expect them to come out guns blazing to try and get a notch in the win column in his honor. In Dallas, Holtby is a noticeable drop-off compared to their starter, Oettinger, but both teams have been struggling on defense as of late.

I was heavily debating on taking the over tonight since it's only listed at 5.5 goals where both teams are stepping up offensively and have not been playing very well on defense. With that said, I decided to take both the over and Nashville Moneyline. The Predators will have plenty of momentum on their side after the retirement of Rinne's number tonight and since these teams are so close in the standings, they'll be fighting for every point they can get. You can even parlay these two on FanDuel for some extra odds if you're feeling lucky.
