The Calgary Flames play host to the Minnesota Wild tonight as they look to get things back on track and heading in the right direction. The Flames had their 10 game winning streak snapped in embarrassing fashion after losing 7-1 to the Vancouver Canucks on Thursday. The Wild have been in a little bit of a slump of their own and they are on a two-game losing streak and just 3-5 since the All-Star break. These teams have not played each other in over two years, since January 2020, as they face-off for two games in a row with a mini two-day break before their next game against each other on Tuesday. With that, it’s time to continue our NHL odds series with a Wild-Flames prediction and pick.

Why The Wild Can Cover The Spread/Win

Minnesota has been slipping lately, winning just five of their last 10, and falling down to third in the Central Division with 65 points, just one point ahead of the Nashville Predators. The Wild has no problem on offense as they are averaging 3.7 goals per game, ranking them third in the league. However, defense is the Wild's main concern as they allow 3.0 goals per game, putting them at 20th in the league. Minnesota has a very middle-of-the-pack special teams group as their power-play unit is ranked 15th in the league and converting at 20.3 percent while their penalty killing is succeeding at 79.3 percent of the time, ranking them 18th in the league.

Cam Talbot will more than likely get the start between the pipes tonight as he has been struggling lately, allowing at least four goals in three straight starts. Talbot is now averaging 2.94 goals per game with a .910 save percentage. If the Wild want to keep their playoff expectations alive, they will need to step up in a big way tonight and fly back home with those hard-fought two points.

Why The Flames Can Cover The Spread/Win

The Flames have been red hot lately, pun intended, and they will look to improve on their hot streak and stay in first place in the Pacific Division. The Flames are eighth in goals per game at 3.4 and their powerplay unit is ranked 11th, executing at 21.7 percent. However, Calgary is first in goals against per game at 2.4 but sixth in penalty killing, succeeding at a very good 84.2 percent. Most of the defense can be credited to starting goaltender, Jacob Markstrom, who is 23-11-5 on the year so far with a 2.11 goals-against average and a .926 save percentage. Markstrom is also leading the league in shutouts by a long shot with eight. He'll look to get the start tonight as he'll help shut down the Wild and keep the Flames on track to win their division.

Final Wild-Flames Prediction & Pick

The Flames have been on an absolute roll lately and I don't think one loss will stop them. They'll look to put it behind them as today is a new day. I think they go into tonight with a ‘get it back” kind of attitude and defend home ice with whatever it takes. Give me the Flames at home tonight.
