University of North Carolina officials wasted little time in replacing long-time, legendary head coach Roy Williams, with multiple reports on Monday confirming Tar Heels assistant Hubert Davis next in line for the coveted college basketball job.

Hubert Davis is a Born and Bred Tar Heel

Hubert Davis is a North Carolina native, and a lifetime Tar Heel with considerable NBA experience to boot.

After playing at UNC from 1988-92, the 6-foot-5, 185-pound guard was selected 20th overall by the New York Knicks in the 1992 NBA Draft. Through 12 NBA seasons with the Knicks, Toronto Raptors, Detroit Pistons, Dallas Mavericks, New Jersey Nets, and Washington Wizards, he played in 685 games with 149 starts — averaging 8.2 points, 1.5 rebounds, and 1.7 assists throughout his career.

His 44.1% career 3-point percentage is third all-time in NBA history behind Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr and Philadelphia 76ers guard Seth Curry, and Davis also holds the same record in Tar Heels history.

Hubert Davis joined Williams' staff prior to the 2012-13 season after a short stint with ESPN as a college basketball analyst, for what was his first-ever coaching gig of any kind.

With Davis on the sidelines, Williams and UNC went 228-95 (.706) with six trips to the NCAA Sweet 16 (2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017), two visits to the NCAA title game (lost in 2016, won in 2017), and only missed the NCAA Tournament once (2020; 14-19).

Perhaps the biggest highlight of Hubert Davis' professional career came in Game 5 of the 1994 Eastern Conference semifinals against the Chicago Bulls at Madison Square Garden.

With 2.1 seconds to go and the Knicks down 86-85, Davis fired a wide-open triple from the top of the key for the win — only to get fouled on a close-out by Scottie Pippen.

Davis would can both free throws, icing a pivotal 3-2 series lead.
