The 2022 Australian Open hasn't even started but Novak Djokovic has already experienced a wild ride in the Land Down Under. To recall, the world number one's entry to Australia was met with controversy due to his vaccination status.

Djokovic has become infamous as of late for his stand to not get the shot, which is a requirement at the Australian Open. Djokovic's team was hoping to get the green light for a medical exemption. However, a mixup with his visa threw a wrench onto their plans.

On Thursday night, Immigration Minister Alex Hawke dropped the hammer on Novak Djokovic's case, issuing a statement on the matter.

“Today I exercised my power… to cancel the visa held by Mr. Novak Djokovic on health and good order grounds, on the basis that it was in the public interest to do so.

This decision followdd orders by the Federal Circuit and Family Court on 10 January 2022, quashing a prior cancellation decision on procedural fairness grounds.”

Djokovic's situation is unprecedented. Then again, times are different, no thanks to the pandemic. Australian Immigration choosing the “public interest” over an A-lister's participation in a major event speaks volumes about their conviction.

Djokovic's camp may still file an appeal to salvage his chances of playing at the Australian Open. Time isn't on their side, though, as the tournament is slated to begin on January 17th.
