Oregon center Bol Bol slid all the way to the second round of the 2019 NBA Draft, where the Denver Nuggets (via the Miami Heat) selected the injured big man with the 44th overall pick. Even so, he turned heads during draft night with his stylish spider-decorated suit.

In an interview with Bryan Kalbrosky of HoopsHype, Bol explained what was behind the design.

“I’m friends with the rapper Young Thug. The brand, which is called Spider, hadn’t come out yet. But we wanted to do something together that would go viral. That was the plan and it definitely worked,” Bol said on the spider-themed draft suit.

Bol then went on to detail how he became friends with Young Thug, saying that they met through a mutual friend.

“I’ve been friends with Thug for a long time, I met him through another one of my friends. I met him at the studio. He’s also into basketball,” he furthered. “He knew who I was and we became kind of close. [Laughs] I’m honestly friends with a lot of rappers. I’m not like “close close” with too many others besides Quavo from Migos. But I’m cool with a lot of those people.”

The 19-year-old Bol spent one season with the Oregon Ducks, appearing in nine games for the team before injuring his foot. The concern surrounding his foot was in part the reason he fell so precipitously in the draft. Bol averaged 21.0 points and 9.6 rebounds per game in his lone NCAA season.
