Denver Nuggets president of basketball operations Tim Connelly just laid out his argument on how his team has a ‘real chance' to win the NBA title.

Per Mike Singer of the Denver Post, Connelly believes that the Nuggets have the staff and the talent to be an elite team in the Western Conference, advance to the NBA Finals, and win it all.

“I’ve never won a championship so I don’t know how to speak on this with any real authority but I think now it’s, ‘Why not us?’ “You look around, why can’t we win at the highest level? Why can’t we advance to the Finals? Why can’t we be an elite Western Conference team? I know we have the coaching staff, I think we have the talent.”

Last year, the Nuggets notched a 54-win season and qualified for the playoffs for the first time since the 2012-13 season. They made it to the Western Semifinals but lost in seven games to the Portland Trail Blazers. It was a disappointing ending for their fairytale season. But Connely and his team have gotten more confident with last year's campaign.

“We don’t want to put unfair expectations, ‘It’s the Finals or bust, it’s championship or bust,’ but we don’t want to be a defeatist team, either,” Connelly said. “I think you look around, there’s a handful of teams that have a real chance to lift the trophy and I think for the first time ever, in my professional career, I can say with a straight face, that we’re one of those teams.”

Whether or not Connelly's confidence spills on over to reality is a matter of wait and see. But not a single soul is doubting his claims. The Nuggets have risen as one of the top teams in the NBA. And it'll likely remain that way in the years to come.
