The Denver Nuggets have a decision to make soon with regards to Will Barton. The 6-foot-6 small forward is going to hit free agency this summer once his deal with the Nuggets expires. With the way he played during his contract year, averaging 15.7 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 4.1 assists per game last season for Denver, Barton is expected to attract plenty of attention from other teams.

That said, the Nuggets feel they have a good shot at retaining the wiry swingman, according to the team’s president of basketball operations Tim Connelly, per T.J. McBride of Mile High Sports.

What’s going to make it difficult for Denver to re-sign Will Barton is money, of course. After having such a great year, Barton is likely to ask a max offer from the Nuggets, but the team could not relent to that type of request easily, as they are currently over the salary cap by $6 million.

That’s not to mention the situation of Nikola Jokic, who’s entering the last season as a controllable asset by Denver and Wilson Chandler, who just picked up his $12.8 million option for the 2018-19 campaign. All those leave the Nuggets with plenty to think about this offseason.

Barton, who signed a three-year deal worth $10.6 million with the Nuggets in 2015, was a solid fit for Denver, as he supplied ample offensive firepower while operating mostly as part of the team’s second unit. Connelly obviously sees the value of Barton, whom he hopes will return to Mile High City.
