Obi-Wan Kenobi Episode 1 Ending Explained

Obi-Wan Kenobi, Star Wars, EntertainmentThe much-awaited Star Wars series starts with a flashback of Order on Coruscant during the events of Revenge of the Sith as several younglings escape from the new Empire's forces. The scene shifts to a busy marketplace in Tatooine 10 years later as the Grand Inquisitor arrives with two of his associates.

With menace emanating from the gazes, the three enter a saloon after hearing of rumors that a Jedi was once within its premises.  The Grand Inquisitor interrogates the barkeeper until his subordinate, Reva, throws a knife toward him. A customer seated near the corner stops the knife using the Force, revealing his identity to the Imperial inquisitors.

After a scuffle that saw the Jedi flee, the Grand Inquisitor admonishes Reva for being too aggressive and her unreasonable fixation on finding Obi-Wan Kenobi.

The scene then shifts to a factory in the desert, one in which we see Obi-Wan as one of its workers. After a day of working, the former Jedi Master goes home to his cave. While eating, a single Jawa arrives and sells him a toy ship. The diminutive creature informs him of inquisitors nearby searching for Jedi before leaving.

At night, Obi-Wan dreams of his battle with Anakin Skywalker on Mustafar, the last time he saw his former apprentice. Waking up, he calls on his master, Qui-Gon Jinn. No one answers in the darkness of his lonely cave.

The following day, Obi-Wan travels to a series of hills near Owen Lars' farm where he sees a young Luke Skywalker playing from afar. He then leaves the toy ship he purchased from the Jawa before leaving at night.

During his journey back home, the Jedi that fled the inquisitors earlier find Obi-Wan and introduce himself as Nari. Kenobi reluctantly speaks to the young man and implores him to leave to prevent any unwanted attention from the Empire. Disheartened, Nari asks what happened to the once-great Jedi. Obi-Wan responds that they lost and their time is now over.

As bleak as the Tatooine is in this series, it shifts to a brighter tone in Alderaan as Breha Organa discovers her adopted daughter ran away to the woods. At this point, we see a young Leia Organa climbing a tree and identifying the various spacecraft leaving the planet. Breha arrives and takes her back. While this is happening, a mysterious figure lurks in the woods and observes them.

Back on Tatooine, Obi-Wan has just finished his work and is about to go home. All of a sudden, Owen Lars throws the present he gave Luke at the Jedi's feet and threatens him to stay away from the boy. Kenobi then pleads about his training, an idea Lars rebuffs by mentioning how he trained Anakin back then. But before the moisture farmer can get too far, two inquisitors appear and interrogate the crowd about the Jedi they're searching for.

To instill fear, Reva cuts off a bystander's hand as Owen freezes in fear in the middle of the crowd. The inquisitor singles him out and asks if he knows anything about the Jedi. The farmer replies he doesn't know, an answer that Reva doesn't believe. She then threatens to kill Owen and his family, a message Obi-Wan heard while hiding nearby. Fortunately, Reva's associate stops her from hiring Lars and reprimands her for still being fixated on finding Kenobi.

On Alderaan, Leia, Bail, and Breha Organa prepare to receive their guests for a banquet. The young princess spends time with other children, including a male cousin who starts to talk down on her for being an orphan. Leia responds by telling him he only imitates and follows his father out of fear, an act which earned a rebuke from her adoptive parents.

The young Organa then go back to the woods and see three mysterious individuals waiting for her there. They capture Leia, an act that caused Bail to contact Obi-Wan. The Alderaan senator urged Kenobi to rescue her with the Jedi initially refusing because of Luke and the waning of his skill as a Jedi.

A day later, Obi-Wan returns to the marketplace to see the Jedi who approached him for help murdered and hanged for everyone to see. He then returns home to discover Bail Organa himself inside his cave. The senator gives him Leia's destination and finally convinces the Jedi to rescue Leia.

After Organa leaves, Obi-Wan proceeds to a remote part of the desert to dig his old lightsaber up in preparation for his mission. It is then revealed that the mastermind behind the capture of Leia is no other than Reva herself to motivate the old Jedi Master to come out of his hiding. The episode ends with Kenobi leaving Tatooine to rescue the young princess.

What just happened? A Obi-Wan Kenobi episode 1 recap

Obi-Wan Kenobi's first foray on the small screen set up the Jedi's exile on Tatooine, along with the massive guilt he keeps for failing Anakin. Along with him, Star Wars fans are treated to the first live appearance of inquisitors after they first came out on the animated show Rebels.

Perhaps the biggest takeaway from this Obi-Wan Kenobi episode 1 recap is that the introduction of a young Leia wasn't just for fan service. Her inclusion in the show serves as the primary reason for Obi-Wan to come out of hiding as the former Jedi tries to rescue the Rebel Alliance's future leader. And while much of the episode dealt with Kenobi's life after Order 66 and the Empire's rise, it was compelling enough to hook viewers in and see what happens next.
