It was an ugly scene at Neyland Stadium when fans pelted stuff on the field toward the end of the Tennessee Volunteers' 31-26 loss to the Ole Miss Rebels on Saturday night. Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin was the target of some of these projectiles, including a golf ball that actually hit him. He also caught a water bottle that was fired at him as he walked off the field surrounded by security.

Kiffin took it all in stride, making jokes about the situation and then taking to Twitter after the game to do a bit of trolling. Via ESPN:

“It's an emotional game and fans are emotional, but you never expect something like that, to see all that stuff come flying out of the stands,” Kiffin told ESPN. “I got hit with a golf ball, but at least whoever threw it was smart enough to throw a dirty range ball.”

The Ole Miss coach joked that he was going to keep the golf ball as a souvenir:

Kiffin had more to say:

“There were a number of bottles with some brown stuff in them,” Kiffin said. “I'm not sure what it was. It probably wasn't moonshine. They probably wouldn't waste moonshine on me.”

The madness began with just under a minute to play in the game. A controversial call and upheld review going against Tennessee resulted in the fans going crazy and throwing things on the field, leading to a 20-minute delay in the game. The game was able to be finished with Ole Miss holding off the Volunteers, but the tomfoolery continued, resulting in mass condemnation by Tennessee and SEC administrators.

This was an emotional game to begin with given Kiffin's history at Tennessee. He was hired in 2009 and coached there for just one season before bolting for USC. His quick departure upset students and fans and even led to riots, so it's no surprise things got ugly on Saturday night in Knoxville.
