The status of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, slated to begin on February 4, recently came into question due to the COVID-19 pandemic, as some have advocated for the Games to be postponed. The IOC, or International Olympics Committee, responded to the rumors of the 2022 Winter Olympics potentially being canceled due to COVID with a firm message, via ESPN.

A day after Switzerland's team leader asked for talks about possibly postponing the Beijing Olympics because of the coronavirus pandemic, the IOC promised officials worldwide Wednesday the Winter Games will go ahead as planned.

The IOC assured athletes that the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics will still go on, despite the COVID-19 pandemic. The Swiss team leader Ralph Stockli, who raised concerns about the Beijing Olympics due to COVID, said that they are no longer concerned about a postponement in a statement, via ESPN.

The last thing the IOC wants is another postponement, as they had to postpone the 2020 Games due to COVID, the first time the Games have been canceled since a world war.

To combat COVID concerns, the IOC and Beijing Games organizers have created a “health safety bubble”, which includes longer quarantine periods for unvaccinated officials and athletes, daily testing for all regardless of vaccination status and strict rules for all to remain in the bubble.

Even amidst COVID concerns, the IOC says that the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics must go on.
