Former world champion boxer Oscar De La Hoya is returning to the boxing ring in an absurd “old man” exhibition against former UFC champion Vitor Belfort.

Longtime MMA and combat sports journalist Ariel Helwani, formerly of ESPN, reported Oscar De La Hoya and Vitor Belfort have a verbal agreement for a bout in September. The bout will be promoted by Triller, the same group that sponsored Jake Paul vs. Ben Askren.

It should be pretty absurd that Oscar De La Hoya, also the founder of Golden Boy Promotions, is taking on a former UFC champion.

Yet, boxing fans just watched a joke of a spectacle between the greatest fighter ever in Floyd Mayweather and a YouTuber in Logan Paul. Of course, Mike Tyson and Roy Jones Jr. also went at it last fall.

Noting can be ruled out anymore when it comes to the squared circle. This fight, though, is a weird battle between two aged stars.

Oscar De La Hoya is 48 years old. Belfort is 44 years old. Both are well past their respective primes. De La Hoya has not fought in 13 years, while Belfort has not entered the boxing ring since 2006. He has not even been in the Octagon since 2018, retiring after a knockout loss at the hand of Lyoto Machida.

One can't help but wonder if this will resemble the infamous third fight between Tito Ortiz and Chuck Liddell. That fight, of course, was promoted by De La Hoya himself.

De La Hoya is apparently in cahoots with Triller and wants to fight multiple times, but this bout is unlikely to provide too much inspiration for fans.
