The 94th Academy Awards was one show that truly shocked the world. In an unscripted moment, Will Smith walked toward Chris Rock and slapped the presenter after the latter made a joke about Jada Pinkett-Smith. But before the issue gets more out of hand, the King Richard actor has released a heartfelt apology over his actions during the Oscars.

In a post shared by Smith on his official Instagram page, he said that the behavior he displayed during the Academy Awards was unacceptable and inexcusable. He added that Rock's joke concerning his wife's medical condition was too much for him, causing the actor to react emotionally.

As Rock was presenting the nominees for the Best Documentary award, the comedian pointed out Pinkett-Smith's bald hairstyle by saying he's looking forward to G.I. Jane 2, a film starring Demi Moore playing a soldier with her shaved off. The actress is known to suffer from alopecia, a condition that causes hair loss, prompting her to be visibly irked at Rock.

This joke led Smith to approach Rock on stage and slap him while the Oscars was being broadcasted live. In his apology, Smith publicly apologized to Rock and admitted he was out of line.

“I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be. There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness,” Smith added.

Rock, for his part, has declined to press any charges against the King Richard actor. He has also not yet responded to Smith's apology.

Smith also took the opportunity to seek amends from the Academy, the show's producers, those who attended the Oscars, the Williams family, and the cast of King Richard. The Academy Award winner then concluded his statement by saying that he's still a work in progress.

With Smith's side out to the public, it can only be a matter of time before this whole debacle will be resolved. Until then, the public's attention has now shifted to Rock and how he will respond to the actor's heartfelt apology.
