Who would have thought that Will Smith can win an Oscar and slap Chris Rock on live television in one night? Well, both of these things happened, which led to a very powerful and emotional speech from the actor during the recent Academy Awards.

In a video shared by Variety on Twitter, Smith went up on stage to receive the Best Actor award for his role in King Richard. Among the other nominees in this category were Benedict Cumberbatch, Javier Bardem, Andrew Garfield, and Denzel Washington. With tears in his eyes, the actor received the said award and went on a five-minute speech detailing his appreciation of the movie's cast and what happened earlier in the night.

“Richard Williams was a fierce defender of his family. In this time of my life, in this moment, I am overwhelmed by what God is calling on me to do and be in this world,” Smith said at the start of his speech.

Smith then gave a shout-out to Aunjanue Ellis, Sanniya Sidney, and Demi Singleton, actresses who played key roles in King Richard, including those of Venus and Serena Williams.

“In this business, you've got to be able to have people disrespecting you. And you got to smile and pretend that's okay. Denzel said to me a few minutes ago that at your highest moment, be careful. That's when the devil comes for you,” Smith added.

This exact moment was captured as the awards show went to commercial and Denzel Washington was seen calming Smith down after the incident with Rock. During that instance, Smith can be seen in tears from a distance.

Smith then went on to mention Venus and Serena Williams, who were shown in attendance in the crowd, and asked forgiveness from the Academy and fellow nominees for his actions earlier that night. It was at the point when Smith said that “love will make you do crazy things” after pointing out that he has become a crazy dad like Richard Williams was to his kids.

Smith ended his acceptance speech by hoping that the Academy invites him back after what happened tonight. Although that remains to be seen, what's certain is that the King Richard actor will be the talk of the town for a lot of reasons after winning the Oscar for Best Actor.
