Blizzard has finally taken the steps to introduce cross-platform play for Overwatch.

The developers initially had misgivings about allowing cross-platform play for the game. They cited the difference between mouse-and-keyboard gameplay and controllers being the primary reason why they don't want to feature cross-platform play. “Mixing mouse/keyboard and controller can have balance and competitive issues,” Blizzard tweeted way back in 2016 using the official Overwatch Twitter account. Perhaps the change in leadership in Overwatch‘s development played a role in this change in stance. Whatever the reason is, this change is a welcome change. We can also expect the same rule to stand for Overwatch 2.

Blizzard hasn't revealed yet when the CrossPlay feature will be added to Overwatch. Rather, they announced that a Cross-Play Beta “will be coming soon.” They confirmed that the Cross-Play feature will be added to all consoles where Overwatch is playable. But for console players, they will now have to create a Battle.net account, whether or not they plan to use the Cross-Play feature.

However, progress will not carry over between consoles. Competitive will also be exempted from Cross-Play. For more details on this, check out Overwatch Cross-Play's FAQ page.

How to Activate Overwatch Cross-Play

For console Overwatch players who do not have a Battle.net account yet, they will have to make one now. If they already have one, they can log in with their existing Battle.net account on their consoles. Then, they will have to link their console to their Battle.net account. To do that, follow these steps:

RECOMMENDED (Article Continues Below)
  1. Launch the game on your system.
  2. Press the confirmation button to progress through the Overwatch welcome screen.
  3. You will be presented with an alpha-numeric code and a QR code.
    1. The alpha-numeric code can be entered at blizzard.com/link.
    2. The QR code may be scanned with a mobile app to take you to the linking webpage, which will be pre-populated with the code provided in-game.
  4. Log in with your Battle.net account credentials to finalize the connection between your console game and Battle.net accounts.
  5. You will receive a message in-game that notifies that your account is now successfully connected.

Note: These steps will only be done once Cross-Play has rolled out.

To celebrate the CrossPlay Beta, players will get a Golden Loot Box for each one of their consoles. To claim this, they simply have to log in using their account on their platform of choice. The Golden Loot Box can be claimed until the end of 2021.
