Overwatch‘s iconic cowboy, previously known as Jesse McCree, gets a new name as Cole Cassidy. By renaming the hero, the developers hope to separate the character from the controversies surrounding the Blizzard Entertainment developer he was named after. Alongside this, players will also get a chance to change their BattleTag across Blizzard games free of charge.

Earlier this year, the cowboy's namesake developer was directly implicated in a sexual harassment lawsuit against Blizzard. Rightfully so, the allegations elicited severe backlash from the community. Players urged for a name change, especially with how popular and recognizable the character was, having been part of the game since the release. Casters of the Overwatch pro scene also firmly avoided saying the name on their broadcasts.

Overwatch then revealed plans to rename the cowboy last August. Just last October 22, the dev team announced the hero's new identity via a Tweet. However, the change will only arrive in the live servers on October 26 when the next patch update rolls around.

Fans can also expect a new narrative arc and story content to drop alongside this name change. But that's not all. Players will also receive a free BattleTag change across Blizzard's various worlds, including Overwatch, World of Warcraft, and Hearthstone. Normally, users all get one free name change upon creating their accounts, with subsequent alterations costing $10.

From today until November 5, players can request for a new BattleTag through Blizzard’s name change request service for free. But the opportunity is only valid for those players who already previously used up the free change that came with their accounts. Otherwise, the free BattleTag change won't be doubled up.

In addition, the new names still have to comply with Blizzard's naming guidelines. These requests may take up to four weeks to complete, but just as how Cassidy's name drop may have taken a while, a change was needed and can only hopefully mean good things.
