When the San Francisco 49ers agreed to the terms of a contract extension (five-years, $137 million) with quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, they knew the world would take notice. Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers certainly did.

Ron Kroichick of the San Francisco Chronicle caught up with Rodgers at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am to get his thoughts on Garappolo’s contract:

“It’s crazy in football. A lot of times it takes just one or two guys in the right spot. And when you get John Lynch as the GM, Kyle Shanahan as the head coach and Jimmy G as the quarterback, that’s what a franchise is looking for.”

Of course, what we all wanted to hear was how he felt about the numbers and what they meant for his next extension. He signed a five-year, $110 million deal back in 2013 that put him under contract until 2020. But he can opt out after the 2018 season.

So, it will be his turn for a new deal fairly soon.

Since Garappolo is raking in $27.5 million a year, Kirk Cousins and Drew Brees are going to get more. Matt Ryan will command a hefty salary the year after as well.

Once those guys sign, Rodgers will easily command a high salary. It is not hard to imagine him making north of $30 million a season.

Yeah, getting his thoughts on that would have made for compelling reading—but Rodgers is too smart. He’d never share contract-related thoughts like that with the general public.
