The Dallas Cowboys made it official. Mike McCarthy is their head coach. Aaron Rodgers, quarterback of his former team, the Green Bay Packers, is happy for him and has a theory of why he was hired.

McCarthy and Rodgers won a Super Bowl in Arlington. They won several big games against the Cowboys in Dallas. The Packers quarterback figures Jerry Jones' first-hand look at the coach played a part in hiring him.

We’ve had a lot of success down there, and I think that was probably one of the reasons,” Rodgers said on Wednesday, via Pro Football Football. “We won the Super Bowl down there, we won some big games down there over the years. So I’m not surprised that Jerry had an infatuation with Mike because we’ve had some really good performances. I thought maybe he would go somewhere where he had some GM opportunity was well. But I’m happy for him. I sent him a text, he sent me a text back.”

For McCarthy, switching from the Packers to the Cowboys may not be a seamless fit. Unlike in Green Bay, he will have a demanding owner breathing down his neck in Dallas. He will not have as much as a say in personnel decisions.

McCarthy coached Rodgers for 11 seasons with the Packers. In doing so, the two won Super Bowl XLV while Rodgers won the MVP award twice. The Packers fired him after a disappointing campaign in 2018. After sitting out a season, he returns to the coaching ranks in Dallas.
